Proverbs 9: It's Your Choice
"Lay aside immaturity and live, and walk in the way of insight...whoever corrects a foolish person gets hurt - a fool who is rebuked will hate you; the wise, when rebuked, will love you. Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser still; teach the righteous and they will gain in learning...
"If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you are a fool, you alone will bear it.
The foolish person is loud; they are ignorant and know nothing."
(Excerpts from Proverbs 9)
Whose house will you end up at at the end of your journey? Lady Wisdom's house or the house of the foolish woman?
Did you know that these words in Proverbs chapter 9 are meant for you, today? They are so relevant to our current culture of toxic speech and hatred of people. We dehumanize others and in the dehumanization of others, we dehumanize ourselves. We are like a tree who chops at our own base not realizing it until we fall headlong in the woods.
Who will be able to put us back up again? Who will be able to reassemble our roots to make us stand strong? If we are foolish we will tear down others, ourselves, and our entire culture in one fell swoop.
Beware...it's your choice.
What will your mind and words do?
Where will they go?
Who will your words and thought build up?
Who will they tear down?
"You will know a tree by its fruit..."
The fool believes they are wise, yet everyone else can see and smell the rotten fruit.
It's your choice. Which way will we go?
Who will we believe?
Will we choose wisdom and live or foolishness and die?
Proverbs 9 is presenting us with a choice.
We falsely believe that it is right to hate people who are "wrong."
Proverbs is leading us into God's Wisdom - which says that fearing Him is the beginning of learning how to really live.
To put that more simply it means we have a choice...either we live according to our own definition and interpretation of the world, or we humbly recognize our proper place and trust in God's provision and understanding of reality.
Fearing God means acknowledging our own limited resources of understanding.
It means trusting in Wisdom to prevail, even when it feels like weakness.
We trust that God's weakness is stronger than what humankind calls "strength."
It's your choice.
Have it your way or have it God's way - but you can't have it both ways.
Wisdom starts when you choose God's way.
It will be obvious to the people around you when you choose wisdom over folly.
Peace over war.
Love over hatred.
Truth over intentional deception.
Comforting words over words intended to incite fear.
It's your choice.
